Virgin America (VX) Airbus A319 First Class In-Flight: Los Angeles - San Francisco (LAX-SFO) 09/2008

We have had very good experience flying Virgin Atlantic in UpperClass, and have been looking for an opportunity to try Virgin America's service within United States.
Virgin America's gate counter at the LAX Airport. Today, I am just taking a short flight from Los Angeles to San Francisco following a long day of meeting and attending the Aircraft Interior Show in Long Beach.
The First Class cabin on the entire Virgin America Airbus fleet is outfitted in white leather. The red pillow and blanket provide an attractive contrast.
The front galley is separated by a transparent blue screen. The flight attendant is preparing pre-departure drink for the first class passengers.
There are two rows of First Class seats on this Airbus A319, with another blue transparent divider separating Main-Cabin-Select, which is the Premium Economy class section with 38-inch legroom.
With a very generous 55-inch legroom for First Class seats, Virgin America offers as much room as International Business Class seats on many airlines just a few years ago.
Underneath the folding tray table is this metal bar, I had a hard time trying to figure out what purpose does it serve? Do you know the answser to this mystery? Scroll down a bit for the answer.
Since we are on a short flight today, we were only offered a simple snack box in First Class.
Tasty olives, Goat cheese, and Salad; unfortunately I had skipped lunch and the servings are a little small.
The flight attendant dimmed the galley lighting after snack service so that we can catch a quick nap before arriving in San Francisco
Virgin America uses only Airbus narrowbodies in its fleet. Today's flight is operated by an Airbus A319, the slightly larger A320 are the other type in the fleet.
Mystery revealed: the metal bar under the tray table is a support for books, a thoughtful design that other airlines probably should copy.

Even though this is a short flight, I came away with a very good impression of Virgin America, chic cabin design, roomy and comfortable seats in First Class, and pleasant flight attendants made for a nice flight. I look forward to trying Virgin America's longer transcon service.
